>>>Jesus’ final week (Passover/Easter week)
>>>He and the disciples were in the upper room preparing to have their Last Supper.
John 13:1–11 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come that He would depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper and laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are clean—but not all of you.” For He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come that He would depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
>>>This chapter begins before the Passover Feast takes place.
>>>Jesus “knows” that it is time for Him to leave and go back to His Father.
*Several times “knowing” appears but different Gk. words. This word (oida) means simple knowledge/being aware.
>>>Jesus is also described as loving His disciples “to the end”.
*Part of Jesus’ mission on earth was His disciples.
*This is the beginning of chs. 13-17, the most intimate discussion between Jesus and His followers.
===============================================================
John 13:2–5 And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, got up from supper and laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself.
>>>(v.2-3) Now during supper tension is building-The devil had already put it into Judas’ heart to betray Jesus, and Jesus knows (same word) that God has handed all things to Him.
*The cross is getting “real”-Jesus vs. Satan.
>>>(v.4-5) These verses are the actions of Jesus knowing He will be on His way to death.
*Gets up from supper
*Takes off outer garment/wraps towel around Himself
*Pours water into a basin
*Washes disciples’ feet-ministry being about disciples (dirt from walking)
>>>In the battle between light/darkness, Jesus takes the position of the lowest servant and serves His disciples.

John 13:6–8 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.”
>>>(v.6-7) It was Peter’s turn-he wasn’t first.
>>>Peter voiced the confusion the other disciples would have had: “why is Jesus washing our feet?”
>>>Jesus said that Peter does not yet “realize” (oida-discern/figure out) what is happening but will “understand” (ginosko-grasp) later.
*Jesus will use this as an illustration of serving one another but also the reason He came.
>>>(v.8) Peter told Jesus that He will NEVER wash his feet (echo of Jesus will NEVER be killed).
>>>Jesus replied that if He does not wash Peter, he has no “place” (share) in Him.
*Jesus was taking the act of washing and giving it a spiritual meaning-washing is a picture of salvation.
Psalm 51:2 Wash me thoroughly from my guilt And cleanse me from my sin.
Ezekiel 36:25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.
Acts 22:16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on His name.’
*Salvation is Jesus “washing” a person’s life-cleaning them from their sins.
*If a person is not “washed” by Jesus, he cannot be a part of Jesus.
John 13:9–11 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are cleanbut not all of you.” For He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
>>>(v.9) Peter wanted to be a part of Jesus so he asked Jesus to wash all of him. But he was missing what Jesus was saying-still thinking earthly/physically.
>>>(v.10) Jesus says that someone who has bathed only needs to wash his feet but is overall clean (free from dirt).
*A person who bathed still got his feet dirty from walking w/sandals.
>>>Jesus then says that Peter/some of the other disciples were already “clean”. This use of the word is not being physically clean but spiritually clean (clean from sin).
*How does this apply to washing Peter’s feet? Jesus was teaching sanctification.
*Peter does not have to be washed (saved) again. Jesus declared him clean. Now it’s about the cleanliness affecting all of his life.
>>>(v.10-11) Jesus had said that the disciples were clean but not all of them, because He knew Judas would betray Him.
===============================================================
>>>Jesus was using the last hours He had on earth to continue investing in His disciples. His heart is for all people but especially those who follow Him.
>>>What He was teaching Peter/the disciples was not only serving but sanctification after salvation.
*Salvation is something done once-already washed. Sanctification is something one continuously.

PETER: SAVED BUT NEEDING SANCTIFICATION

>>>(Illust.) Salvation is like a car. We buy the car-it’s ours, but then we must do maintenance-fixing the issues that come up.
>>>Jesus saves us, but there are “maintenance issue” that come up that need to be fixed.
>>>We are saved (clean) but we need to “wash our feet”, because our sinful flesh sinful tries to bring us into sin-renew our minds/work on how we speak/bring emotions under control/etc.
>>>Jesus washed all His disciples’ feet, including Judas’. He not only served the one who would betray Him but also included him in the illustration of being sanctified-YET HE WAS NOT CLEAN.

JUDAS: “SANCTIFIED” BUT NEEDING SALVATION

>>>No one can be sanctified if they are not saved, but this point applies to those who participate in the things of Jesus, yet have not received salvation.
>>>Some of you go to church, come to YG, read Bible, answer questions, learn, help, and even want to know. But you are like Judas-under influence of devil, driven by sin, and not truly saved.
*(Illust.) Communion is something that is only for Christians. If communion was taken now, those who are not believers could not participate-no part in Christ. There is a line.
>>>Those like Peter-saved but in the process of being sanctified/becoming more like Jesus. You are clean, but there are some things getting dirt on you that need to be washed off.
*The solution is not “get saved” again but to let the gospel continue to save you. Bring yourself to Jesus for Him to make you more like Him.
>>>Those like Judas. You come, participate, and engage, but you have now share in Jesus. You are not clean.
*See the love that Jesus had even for the one who betrayed Him, dying for him as well. Believe on Jesus and make Him Lord.
